Interested in all things fedi, uspol at least for this year, technology. Loving Sharkey.

@MyOpinion@lemmy.today Yeah the correct takeaway isn’t that it’s dead. Firstly because even though they’re definitely by far the most significant player Meta isn’t the only company doing VR and secondly because they’re continuing to work on it…
But it does say something if they’re drastically cutting the budget and I found Bosworth’s statement partially unconvincing since he decided to pretend like it’s nothing.

@MrsDoyle@sh.itjust.works yeah, as displays get added these can be very helpful for deaf people as well since they already offer real-life captions for conversations for example.

@Buffalox@lemmy.world I’m not saying these companies wouldn’t want to have it constantly on if they could though, Meta already made a video where they showed that it is exactly what they’d like to do at some point in the future if the hardware was able to.

@Buffalox@lemmy.world in what demonstrated uses is it doing that? I’ve only seen it observe when asked to in any of the demos and that’s certainly how Meta’s current glasses do it - you have to request it to take a look.
Meta’s live AI mode does let you have a continuous conversation about your surroundings but that something that you also have to ask for on purpose and that will consume a considerable amount of battery.

@Buffalox@lemmy.world @ChaosMonkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com what are you basing this idea that they’re constantly recording on? I haven’t seen anything that says that is the plan for Google or the case for any current devices and at least for now the battery life concerns are probably something that just prevents it from being a possibility.

@VoidJuiceConcentrate@midwest.social @BrikoX@lemmy.zip listening, sure… just like all our phones and smart home speakers and watches tend to be these days… but what’s your evidence it is always looking? I don’t think that is currently the case but I certainly wouldn’t rule out them doing it in the future once it becomes less of an issue for the battery life of these.

@MyOpinion@lemmy.today I assume Reality Labs works on all the smart glasses and AR tech too so I find it surprising they’d be pivoting away from this space so hard…
Well it seems like the article talks about the “metaverse division” within Reality Labs so you’d think it would be more about Horizon Worlds than VR headsets but the article suggests it is both…

@Gullible@sh.itjust.works There isn’t a problem that could not be solved by legislation here. The police is already able to give tickets to self-driving cars in some states. You can certainly argue that the megacorps aren’t inclined to care when the amount of money involved is tiny but then again that problem exists in most places just as much when it comes to fining rich people. You could always up the amounts if the politicians are willing to do that.
The more consequential thing that can already be done currently is grounding the entire fleet if there’s a good reason for that so it’s not like officials are completely helpless.

@fhein@lemmy.world @Prunebutt@slrpnk.net The aggressive pricing for Deck was an experiment from Valve. I imagine they must consider it mostly successful since it led to the device creating an entire new gaming market segment. The way they are speaking about the Steam Frame and Machine sounds like they’re not ncessarily really looking to repeat that model here though.

@artyom@piefed.social I saw a headline that they’re open to other vendors using it. With the Deck it took them a long time and there’s still not any kind of public build process AFAIK though.

@echodot@feddit.uk I don’t think that’s the determining factor for whether something is useless for AR. AR can be useful even just because it lets you be aware of your surroundings. Then there’s the fun of combining real-world objects and structures with virtual ones. Quest 3 can be good for both to some extent.

@jj4211@lemmy.world the SoC is better than Quest 3 so that is also a notable improvement. Comfort seems likely to be significantly better than with Quest 3 and default strap. Wireless dongle is included in the price. Will have to wait for reviews to know how some other aspects compare.

@utopiah@lemmy.world @ampersandrew@lemmy.world seems like there’s more potential for hardware upgrades than with any other headset since the system has separate modules for compute/optics+display/tracking and audio/strap/power but sure, no XR headset is going to be very upgradable given the harsh constraints on size and weight.

@MoonlitSanguine@lemmy.zip @jcs@lemmy.world it would certainly be good for it to be relatively affordable but they’re really not promising it will at the moment since they only said aiming it to be cheaper than an Index.

@Kolanaki@pawb.social @ampersandrew@lemmy.world @games@lemmy.world
Some important differences in the specs. It’s not the same SoC, should have like 20-30% more GPU power, then there’s their whole wireless streaming system (comes with the dongle). Could potentially do something better for audio but it certainly cannot be Index quality in that regard.
At the end of the day Meta does still do the console thing of subsidizing the headset with the software and Valve doesn’t always do that so how close or far it lands in price is going to depend on that too.
I don’t deny these can cause privacy issues as does the ubiquity of small devices with high quality cameras in general but I don’t think this law professor really understands the tech very well if she’s worried about “nudification” in connection to these.
There’s nothing in particular about smartglasses that would enable such a use and they’re considerably worse than a regular phone for that in every regard except for the covert picture taking. They completely lack the displays and processing power needed for it unlike, say, a phone.
