  • “Change the meanings of words”? I didn’t do that. I pointed out that there exist multiple meanings to the same word. Work on cultural racism by Balibar et al. is not new either, it’s been around for something like 30-40 years. If your worldview is too narrow, then expand it, go educate yourself. Don’t give me this kind of anti-intellectual bullshit, especially in a progressive space like this one.

The person I was responding to before you was not simply claiming that “two evils exist on different magnitudes”. They were dismissing one of the “two evils” by trivializing the cultural racism of islamophobia as “not liking someone’s dumbass religion”, i.e., something that boils down to some kind of harmless personal choice, like preferring fries to onion rings.

My argument from the start is that if one type of bigotry is grounds for cancelling, so is the other. And this is literally in the thread about a post about a progressive politican who is being subjected to cultural racism. What do you stand for here buddy?

ICE is a law enforcement agency. It’s a police. With a special immigration mandate.

I guess I am not clear what is meant by “handle the processing of people as they complete the immigration process”. In Canada, things like applications and forms are handled by IRCC, the immigration ministry. Other than that, there is CBSA, which is like your CBP, but we don’t have a specialized interior immigration police.

There needs to be some kind of immigration enforcement just to handle the processing of people as they complete the immigration process.

No there doesn’t. We don’t have anything similar like a dedicated anti-immigration police in Canada or in the EU. There are border protection agencies and there are immigration bureaucracies, but this special immigration police thing going on in the US, is not a thing.

The NDP’s problem is not the candidate, it’s the lack of policy alternative. We just spent 10 years on very incremental small potatoes. Sure non-universal dental and pharmacare is absolutely not nothing but these are not normal times. We need some Mamdani style policy proposals, a morally ambitious program to reform Canada.

    Things like:

    • am aggressive tax policy to curb income and wealth inequality, which is a ticking bomb for our democracy
    • massive increases in non-market housing to address the housing crisis
    • free university to expand and train our next generation of doctors and nurses
    • a decisive energy transition and an actual war on the fossil economy, from the wells to the pumps
    • a new urban strategy framed around transit and active transport
    • a restorative economy and actual reconciliation and land back to indigenous people
    • a program for opening our borders aiming to grow and renew our smaller towns and cities
    • a renewal of our glorious Peacekeeping tradition and a positive role in the world based on an uncompromising commitment to international law

We are facing a slew of crises from the climate, to fascism, to billionaire dragons siphoning capital and throwing us into economic stagnation.

If we don’t argue for our ideals, who will?

The NDP needs to do its job and present a brave democratic socialist vision for Canada and start shifting the Overton window to a future where the Liberals would be the right and the Tories the minor party.
