Brace? That’s not the verb I would use.
I don’t know how I’ll survive the celebrations, I’m bracing myself.

They mean “brace” as in one of those things you attach to act as a support for structural deficiencies. They need to “brace” Nancy because she’s too old to stay upright on her own.

(In all seriousness, she’s been fairly progressive as far as Dem leadership goes, and would do enough behind the scenes that she would only take a vote when she knows she has the votes.
