I do agree. More equipment = fewer people getting into the sport. And if you do it for road, then you have to do it for gravel races…
It’s a tough call. I guess if a large number of pros want it, then it should be done.

Why bother subsidizing at all? Either make it publicly owned or tell them that they are on their own. Viable businesses will succeed without handouts.

For commuters, reducing comfort, increasing sweat, and spending more just doesn’t fly. It’s hard enough to get people to wear helmets.
Same as above for recreational riders.
I say that as someone who wore full on motorcycle equipment while riding an e-scooter that could go 50km/h, but I kept it legal at under 25 km/h. Overkill to the max.
It’s challenging enough to dress comfortably and without sweating too much while cycling normally. I can’t imagine adding an armored jacket or pants to the mix. MTB and downhill riders do wear stuff like that, though.

“No money for education, healthcare, or bike lanes.”
Also, “We’re spending countless tens of millions to widen a road so that people can sit in traffic for 30 seconds less than before while making it less safe for all other road users! Vote for us again, plz.”

Drivers should be trained and tested as if they were pilots, IMO. The mere fact that they cause so much devastation should make this an obvious necessity.
FWIW, I’m in Canada, and driver training lowers insurance premiums for a very long time, so I’d imagine that most people go through training. I’d be crazy not to…

And if the land isn’t already fertile, you need to set up alternative land to grow the food for those cows… then import the water…
This is not sustainable, and should be discouraged.

It takes a special kind of scumbag to vandalize red light and speed cameras.

That camera issued 67 000 speeding tickets44·1 day agoI found the perfect punishment for the assholes doing this: have them pay a fine that’s the equivalent to what the camera would have generated for the amount of time it takes for the camera to be replaced.
But the person needs to pay for the camera to be replaced first, so those fines are going to add up if that doesn’t happen quickly.
Give them 60 days to pull it off, and then start charging interest.
People who do this are a direct threat to public safety, but I think jail is too easy.

Ultimately, I had to get my son and a friend to help, and we used super-industrial zip ties and a clamp + soap and water… thank fuck you only need to do that every few years.

The needless suffering and killing of any animal is horrifically unethical, and if we can, we should actively stop participating in it.
There are a ton of mental gymnastics used to justify the consumption of animals. Almost none apply to modern civilization.

The amount of clear-cutting needed for beef as an example would blow your mind. Then you factor in the ground, air, and water pollution from these factory farms, and you’ve just fucked up into entire regions, just to sustain a food source that isn’t even needed.

Think about it: human drivers are put through training and then tested. Then they are licensed and given demerit points so if they screw up enough, they don’t get to drive.
But Teslas? “Oops”. Carry on.
We’d never be OK with humans driving into oncoming traffic like a suicidal teen. Why are we still OK with suicidal machines doing it?

The way cities are built, we overuse “arterial roads” and put them everywhere. Such terrible design, which is why people get killed far too often.

Some models use split-rim wheels, which are supposed to be far better to work with.
But fortunately, the front bearing on this model is super easy to replace. I might just go for the bearing swap and then clean the drum brake while I’m at it.
She deserves to be cared for after this many years.

As a bonus, it CAN still take a powerbrick charger, and high speed chargers are available in that case. Really depends on your use case, but if you’re only riding <10km at a time, you won’t need a fast charger.
Very interesting! The bike is from the 90s and has the hanger and washer, but I just read an article from Rene Herse, and it does sound like the hanger replaces the washer.
Time to wrench! 😂
