Preemptively criticizing Gavin and opposing him in the Primaries but voting for him if necessary in the general election is also an option. No need to equate opposing him with handing Republicans a win.
We got Trump again because instead of sticking with the plan and stepping aside, Biden insisted on being reelected and instead of the DNC looking at his obvious decline and insisting on a primary, they fell in line.
