• 1488 - Arguably the original dog whistle. “14” = The 14 words of some popular racist slogan; “88” = 8th letter of the alphabet is H, so HH, so Heil Hitler. “14” and “88” are also used just on their own sometimes, meaning the same thing.
• \\\ (3 backslashes) - Associated with “Diagolon,” a white nationalist group in Canada… appears in Twitter bios and stuff.
• Canada’s Red Ensign flag - Just Canada’s old flag… but co-opted by white nationalists in like a “good old days” kind of way.
• Totenkopf - Just a skull (crossbones optional). But it was used as a symbol by the Nazi SS, and is sometimes used in that context.
• Sunnengrad/Black Sun/Sun Wheel - Apparently just straight up a Nazi symbol, just a more obscure one. Shakira used it by accident once.

Most of these were actually new to me, so TIL. Also picked up the term “irony poisoning” which is a useful way to label a thing that I’ve observed. Video is worth a watch if you can.

And this is it: Many of those “AI will be so smart that it can solve these problems for us!” arguments refer to problems where having a “smart” enough solution isn’t the problem… Getting people to care/notice/participate/get out of the way is.

That art style is called “Alegria” or “Corporate Memphis” and it always makes me feel kind of nauseated, even without the cannibalism.

It’s also frustrating because there are people who are sincerely trying to discuss in good faith while having a different opinion, which is camouflage for the sealion trolls.

Of course, people increasingly forget about the former group completely, and react with hostility… It’s understandable, but unfortunate for healthy discussion.

At least in your case, your response is to lay out robust arguments to explain your position, which is productive regardless of whether they’re trolling or sincere. I’ve learned a great deal over the years from strangers on the internet putting a clinic on someone who may or may not have been trolling.
