This reasoning is founded on the idea that there is at any given time a reasonably just distribution of wealth and the capability of the market to fill most any niche that society needs. Neither is even close to true the best way to get more wealth isn’t to do anything in particular it is to already possess it and those who hold the overwhelming majority of wealth act to continually tilt the game board to ensure more of it fills their pockets and absent laws limiting their power and redistributing their wealth inevitably until their entire society collapses.

We and others have been flogging the idea of the market as the solution to all ills for about 3 centuries and their isn’t a nation on earth that is anything remotely like purely capitalistic because there is no fucking reason to believe such a thing could ever work. Every functional nation has a central government which subsists on either a massive pile of material wealth it has appropriated for itself like Saudi Arabia or taxes its citizens to perform many functions that the market is ill suited to provide. If Libertarianism worked why has nobody done it in centuries?

You point out the money spent by LA to address homelessness and treat waste as a natural law when it is a function of a defective system not a specific failing which it so obviously is. We burn a bunch of money pretending to solve homelessness because we are shits. Finland solves it by housing nearly everyone because they are not. Hell social security, medicaid, and medicare proves the government CAN if it sets it’s mind to it help people successfully.

The love the idea of performative goodness which costs them less than a dollar one time which they can then milk endlessly for good vibes with their fellow man buuuuut they really don’t want to come off $300 every month so that the young woman who works in the same establishment can have enough to feed her kids well. It costs a lot more it scales and nobody personally thanks them or sees them being a good person when they pay the IRS to fund this. If they pay the IRS that is.

  • The thief would have to prove that they were harmed by a particular person. Meanwhile such attacks are in public places people are moving through hit and run style. Police response times are long on non-emergency issues and the last thing the thief wants is police contact.

A: The thief doesn’t call the cops B: If the thief does call the cops the person is gone, C: If they follow you are being followed by someone who tried to harm you pepper spray them D: the police do not meaningfully investigate the thief’s claims if they are alone E: if both parties are present the police don’t care about petty crimes they didn’t see and therefore can’t prove so let everyone go F: If you got harmed reaching into someone’s purse they are liable to prosecute the thief not the victim if anyone especially if they admit they had their hand in your purse G: if the thief does try to sue its in small claims court for actual damages which are small and creates a record of their identity allowing you to popularize their face and identity in the local area as the thief who sued his victim. Seriously start putting up posters with their face around the area. Loss of illicit revenue will be higher than gains. Hopefully they also get stomped later.

Since all of these things are implicitly obvious and most importantly the first rule being a hood is avoid police contact we basically normally always stop at 1.

  • The funny thing is that you think everyone else is the problem when zero legit offers means its virtually certain your asking price was nonsense.

People with used obsolete goods often have expectations of value pegged to what they originally paid for it rather than what it’s worth.

Search your own or similar good on markets to see what other people are paying for similar or better goods.

Is Amazon selling something for 20 similar to what you paid 50 for 5 years ago? Shipped to your door tomorrow for free? Well then nobody is driving an hour out to your place next Tues to pay you 25.

  • This just isn’t true because mugging and pick pocketing are different crimes done in different circumstances. People who are willing to risk a small amount of non violent risk don’t just accept a much larger risk in crowded circumstances where they are unlikely to get away with it.

Instead they are likely to commit other crimes or the same in more amenable circumstances. Criminals have bad risk assessment not none

  • Prove it. Police response time for non-emergancy issues could easily be 30+ minutes after which i would have moved on. Also investigatory resources for cases that aren’t gift wrapped or murders are about nil.

Civil cases for any meaningful non-small claims affair are going to start at 5000-10,000 and are basically unavailable for poor people. You aren’t entitled to a free lawyer.

Small claims is going to be for actual damages which are going to be about nil and are going to get you near no money and 15 minutes of fame.

Here is what actually happens. Thief endures a small amount of pain and humiliation and fucks off.

The actual risk isn’t a hypothetical lawsuit it’s that it leads to a fight where you might be injured.
