If you think through the situation you’ll realize the barriers are just ramps at normal driving speeds. So a car in the air without any human control makes the entire situation more dangerous than a real barrier or just fold over markers. The problem is the US wouldn’t get rid of them, they’d just do what they always do and prop up one as the defacto monopoly and use it to control the region. Drugs are to valuable to the justice system to let go.

When I think of US history, unity and stability are probably the last adjectives I’d use. I don’t see this period as notably worse than any other transitional period. Unless it’s clearly meant to be an insult you can assume they are just trying to be emphatic in their disbelief. It’s not particularly recent, the playful use of those phrases at least goes back to the 90’s in America, I can’t say elsewhere.
