1·15 days agoIt’s not impossible and not sustainable. A 12/5 or 10/6 is considered “normal” in my industry/company. It’s toxic af but a lot workplaces in the US bake in competition as either an incentive for compensation. Some teams have a mandatory oncall rotation that fits that schedule if not slightly more
The number of people replying anecdotally to this and other comments make me think it’s a lot more pervasive than I’d assumed. Young people in particular are being encouraged to work these kinds of hours to “get ahead” or “show initiative” in the hopes they don’t get laid off or overlooked for promotions
I personally work it and I cannot handle it. The second I’m home my brain is done, only have time to do some mild (unhealthy usually) mental decompression and sleep poorly lol

politics @lemmy.world•The American dream feels impossible for many young voters, who see no political fix
38·27 days agoI grew up in a very conservative area. The people in my demographic only want to see change. The right wing government under Trump has been robbing the future blind with zero regard for anyone, but the sentiment I keep hearing is a perception that something is happening. “He’s deporting the criminals,” “he’s saving our jobs,” “he’s making other countries pay us,” “he’s making America safe,” ergo the idea that progression in any direction is progress. People are stupid and short sighted when they are struggling. So the adoption of populism makes a lot of sense to me
Another anecdote, there was a guy I used to work with that would say “we have to go all the way right to come back to center” and they actually believe that would happen lol
Anyway I hate this shit so much, have a good day

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•POV: The highest paid engineer at your company gets fired
161·2 months agoThere are people at my job like that and it’s so annoying. They never answer any questions about how they do things, so I’m having to reverse engineer their solutions if they decide not to be available lol
It’s so frustrating how successful soloing information in corporate environments is
I used to have a manager named Kelly who had recently divorced a man with the last name Kelly
Kelly Kelly
Still makes me laugh
