News@lemmy.world•White House East Wing demolished as Trump moves forward with ballroom construction, AP photos show
81·10 days agoI really don’t care much for America… But it’s an absolute travesty… I’m genuinely surprised that it seems Americans are happy to be treated like utter shit by their own government.

Australia@aussie.zone•Australia has amongst the highest teacher shortages in the OECDEnglish
2·10 days agoLow teacher pay seems like a bit of a stretch. Most states have teachers paid over 100k within a few years of graduating. I think NSW, ACT and WA all start new grads at 85-90k.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•California to become first state to sell cheap insulin through state-backed program
2·16 days agoI also hate private health, and in fact, cop the additional medicare levy on the chin because id rather pay 2-5k in tax that funds medicare, than get some junk private health cover. The problem with bulk billing is it’s so dependent on location. I have great GPs that can get an appointment within a day or two. More rurally you’re waiting 6-8 weeks and paying $90 a pop. Despite their being flaws in Australia you can still at least get emergency life saving care that won’t bankrupt your family. I’m not as well versed but there’s also the safety net for medications which I believe stops the horrendous out of pocket expense across a year

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•Governments announce full details of $102.5m algal bloom summer plan
2·20 days agoThe government is reactionary, I think in part it’s a symptom of a 4 year election cycle. You can spend 100m to potentially fix a problem and people are “happy”. Try to spend a couple of billion to reduce the root cause and people blow a seal.

Technology@lemmy.world•Climate goals go up in smoke as US datacenters turn to coalEnglish
21·22 days agoI have a low carbon footprint and my solar has exported 17,000 kWh more than my usage. Please tell me again how a 0.3 watt hour query is me completely disregarding the environment
Edit: I have ai generated search engine summaries turned off… I hope you do too

24·22 days agoI’m sure people have been making crawlers for 30 years… But I haven’t been, so I’ve been able to access “knowledge” and shape it for my use case. I think equating ~5 queries to torching an acre of forest is a bit hyperbolic which doesn’t help anyone.

12·22 days agoI might not have been clear, no I don’t think I could have done it. Or if I could it would have taken months and months of learning . This was generated in about 5 queries and a total of 25 minutes testing.

13·22 days agoIn this scenario it needs to read a 5 day forecast capture key elements and only send the email/ alert the first time and not the following 4 days(if the alert remains the same) so in my previous attempts at RSS reader apps already in existence, they didn’t meet the need.

726·23 days agoWell, I mean it’s not all marketing and hype. I was able to get it to write a piece of code to scrape a RSS feed and email me if it met certain perameters. I couldn’t have done that without a real grind / if at all. This is effectively the only time I’ve used it, and I think it’s atrocious the amount of petty shit people use it for… but there can be a functional benefit to generative AI. Makes me shed a tear thinking of the energy demand though.

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•Wind and solar smash grid market share records, even after heavy curtailment, coal at new low
2·23 days agoPotential to hit 113% if not curtailed… and potentially curtailed because not wanting a low wholesale price… Really need to get some storage sorted to just absorb the excess generation.

Melbourne@aussie.zone•Police investigate machete brawl at Melbourne shopping centre
8·23 days agoI disagree, the behavior is often a symptom, so if you were to simply shoot people like you are requesting… more people would fill the hole. Need to address culture, lack of community etc

Melbourne@aussie.zone•Police investigate machete brawl at Melbourne shopping centre
11·23 days agoI don’t think anyone is surprised that people who would use a machete against another human would not return the machete… however it’s more of a longer term plan to reduce ease of access to machetes over time. Yes, if someone was hellbent on using a machete they would be able to source them.

We need to just create energy sinks… well effectively batteries but not in the traditional sense. Like kinetic storage. Sure, they’re not efficient, but what does it matter if they’re only in use when electricity has a negative value
