It’s the same kind of energy like the usual “the grant parents built the business, the parents expanded it and the children ran it into the ground”
Or even the theory of empires falling. The first generations establish the empire and make it wealthy, over the next generations people get greedy and decadent, infighting starts and the whole thing collapses. Some say this is happening right now to an empire in all but name.


Our boss was freaking out over people sometimes doing some private calls during work hours and at a certain point absolutely forbade it. So yeah, people would just end the call at 17:00 sharp and switch off the work phone. It took one week before that rule was rescinded.


It’s EU law that if you have to be standby to pick up the phone and go on location at a moment’s notice, those are working hours and need to be paid in full. Most companies are pretty careful to not put it anywhere in the contracts or house rules that you have to be on stand-by, but just verbally keep pushing for it. If they keep pushing, push back with asking for the written rules.


I’ve heard some stories about schools with zero tolerance. Bullying victims soon found out that you get equal punishment for defending themselves or for some serious violence. The logical response is to go full berserker mode.

Often it’s also very basic management skills that gives a very simple model for labor.
Total work done = number of workers * work per hour * hours worked.
That work per hour goes up when hours worked goes down does not fit in the mental model.
It’s like the companies calling themselves Skynet.
If it gets hit by a block of wood that has a few nails in it, it will jam and fall out of the sky.
