  • Really depends on the restaurant.

The smaller or local places where we are have all mostly switched to the handheld mobile devices.

The fast food places are all still front register POS style.

The larger chains or fancier restaurants are mostly still take your card away and run it then return for a signature.

I imagine the holdouts either don’t want to make the technological and cost investment to update (big chains) or they feel the mobile device is too “low class” (fancier restaurants).

  • You might be the reason for my story. I helped a bunch of other people cheat but I didn’t, and it was not directly intentional.

We had TI-89s too but we were required to erase all memory and show the output message to the teacher to be allowed to use it.

I was really into some game on my calculator and didn’t want to lose it from wiping my memory. So, I wrote a program that would mimic all the steps as if you erased it and return the same output at the end. Everybody was asking me to share it and they used it on the next test. I did too but I didn’t have anything saved to use to cheat.

  • Uniforms aren’t part of the culture in US public education.

Also, while uniforms aren’t standard in public schools there is typically a dress code students are expected to follow.

Please don’t engage in a straw man argument. I specifically said “if they had their freedom of choice and autonomy suddenly stripped away”.

Uniforms aren’t part of the culture for the majority of students in the US. If that switched overnight then yes, they would reasonably “freak out”.

Your generalized statement is “delusional”. There are plenty of private schools in the US that require uniforms, numerous jobs that require a specific uniform, and pretty much all businesses have a dress code.

So yes, going from a standard where no uniform is required in a school to having to wear one, especially if it was mandated without warning or input from those it affects would constitute “having your freedom of choice and autonomy taken away”.

Freedom of choice is the ability to make decisions and take actions based on one’s own preferences and desires, without undue external constraints or coercion.

Freedom of autonomy refers to the capacity of an individual to make their own choices and be self-governing, free from external constraints or coercion.

  • A lawyer will send a demand letter, not an affidavit.

An affidavit is for sworn testimony given under oath by someone who is unwilling or unable to appear on the witness stand.

A demand letter is a formal written request for action or payment prior with a threat of legal action for noncompliance.

If they ignore the demand letter then the next step is a civil suit. Depending on the amount this might end up in small claims. Also, tort cases only require a preponderance of evidence.

A preponderance of evidence essentially means you only have to prove something is more likely than not which, in this case, would be pretty easy. The big issue is the expense of this process almost makes it not worth it.

The American legal system favors those with resources.

  • I don’t fully understand what the science is behind this issue but I do know that your eyes are easily affected by your blood and blood pressure.

I used to have regular drops in blood pressure and actually was hospitalized because it was 60/30 once when they checked. I actually lost vision in one eye because blood flow was decreased to the eye long enough the optic nerve died. They speculated it was a significant BP drop that caused it.

I feel like anyone would freak out in the most incredible way if they had their freedom of choice and autonomy suddenly stripped away.

Uniforms aren’t part of the culture in US public education. There’s also conflicting studies on whether uniforms even make a difference so it’s not like there’s a clear argument for them.

Also, while uniforms aren’t standard in public schools there is typically a dress code students are expected to follow.

  • Generally, it doesn’t take a lot to make a vehicle road legal, depending on where it’s registered. The basic requirements for a vehicle to be road legal in the US are:

On the outside of your car, street legal requirements include ground clearance, emission control systems, tires, brakes, bumpers, license plate, lights, hood, and windshields.

On the inside of your car, street legal requirements include seat belts, steering wheel, horn, and rearview mirror.

Different states have different specific requirements but the above requirements are generally country wide.
