  • Well, parent poster was talking about Mastodon, you seem to be talking about threadiverse platforms like Lemmy. One thing that applies to both and every single platform that is large enough for that to happen is that you’re always going to lose out on a lot of the content because there is just too much content for one person to look at. It isn’t actually that difficult to subscribe so much that you get past that point in my experience.

For the Mastodon-type fediverse microblogging platforms there’s some things that can help when trying to sift through the more popular stuff more (and less) similarly to how an algorithmic timeline would do it. Boost bots that track what’s trending and tools like Phanpy that allow you to check out what has been boosted the most in your recent timeline. There’s also starter packs (currently a fedidevs third party feature but will be added to Mastodon in the future too) and Sharkey antennas that let you watch for keywords over all the posts that flow through your instance. When it comes to things that aren’t here yet but are being worked on Fediscovery seems very promising.

Maybe some of that stuff should exist for Lemmy etc. too or maybe the “all” feed could be improved.

  • The current state of VR does still seem to be such that interest is limited. I think the main thing is that using the hardware just needs to get less involved for the masses to bother. If wearing it was like eyeglasses both in terms of weight and what it does to your ability to have awareness of your surroundings you’d probably have many more people interested.

Another piece of the puzzle is certainly the content gap between flat and VR as AAA game devs just don’t see the business case for it still. Things like UEVR and 3D becoming something that is easy to get out of any game or video thanks to AI efforts like Google’s autospatialization could potentially help a lot here. Same with other types of 3D capable hardware like glassless 3D displays and smart glasses becoming so common that 3D becomes more interesting to support again.

  • Again, what de Gaulle thought in the 1960 of the initial stages does not tell you what the EU is today at all.

The reason the EU did not enter into a trade war at least so far is that economists would tell you it’s still less harmful to just negotiate them to be as low as can be and let them be on one side, they hurt the USA more than the EU. Also note that the EU is in the process of negotiating Mercosur and resolving their issues with Chinese EVs so part of their response is to try to open up more free trade with other countries. Trump trying to press for European territory with them and not sticking to anything agreed upon may change the calculus in the future though.
