he isn’t using it to fill social media with slop.

plus, “AI” isn’t inherently evil, like ai models to fold proteins. but soulless generative AI models like diffusion models or LLMs, are practically useless and only make shitty outputs which only make slop.

I’ve taken to calling the latter commercial AI. It’s always some centralised service that is desperate to get to the vendor lock-in stage of enshittification, so they can start building the backdoor for advertisers, then start turning up the heat on customers, bit by bit.

Mark my words, the advertising you’ll see from commercial AI is going to be some of the slimiest, sneakiest, boundary-pushing, gas-lightning slop you have ever seen.

Frank Miller is not a great writer unfortunately. It was lightning in a bottle for DKR, The 300 (though the movie did it more justice) and arguably Sin City (similar to the 300), but not much else landed well for him.

He was always more of an edgy artist than a story writer imo.

Batman from Earth 2 shot Mad Monk when they turned into a werewolf with a silver bullet that killed him, that’s the only GUN “death” I’m aware of. But earth 2 Batman doesn’t have a restriction on guns like prime Batman does.

He’s killed way more people than that though.

I remember reading a batman comic that presented as a very out of place PSA for landmines in which batman picked up an AK and said something like “I hate guns but landmines are worse” and shot up all the landmines.

Anyway thanks to that comic I know to never venture off trail or I might get blown up. I live in the US btw.

Not sure if batman’s reach extended overseas when this was published.

Liking “AI” is kind of a modern day equivalent of liking gas-guzzling, enormous pickup trucks. Sure, it takes you from point A to point B and can tow shit, but there are many more human-friendlier alternatives that does not make you look like a giant douche.

It takes less power to run my local model than it does to play Baldur’s Gate 3, but I haven’t seen anybody shaming people for playing games. Not every LLM is a giant wasteful cloud provider, many are open source and self hosted.

It’s kind of like saying all vehicles are gas guzzling enormous pickup trucks and therefore nobody should travel anywhere. Self hosting on a PC you already own is more like riding a bike in this metaphor.

Show me the percentage of AI prompts done on local models, and if it’s more than a rounding error, I’ll eat my hat.

Also, was your local model trained locally?

What percentage of trips are done on a bicycle?

I’m working on software to help more people do it, but I fear that anti-ai sentiment has lost focus on the problem. Local models are super useful for assistance with code, writing, and all sorts of general tasks. I’ve been working on a tool that allows you to tell the computer what you want and it generates a command line prompt with an explanation of how it works.

Going back to my analogy, it doesn’t matter what you do with your special case of LLM tech. What matters is that most are using it in a destructive way. People do not care if you use your massive pick-up truck to cure cancer. People see a dumb pick-up truck, they assume you voted for Trump. So I’m pretty sure my analogy stands.

And the answer for the training question is a “No”, I presume.

Yes, I agree, but I think it does matter where we go from here. We could say all vehicles are bad, or we could focus on the source of the problem. Corporate AI is what’s using all the electricity and water, it’s what’s creating the worst issues.

Most open source models don’t need additional training, they’re already plenty good for most plain language tasks and the weights are all free to use. Why would I waste power doing my own training when the public options are perfectly adequate?

If you think the perceived threat of these things is some kind of super-AI that takes over the world, you have fallen for the spiel also, which is a huge distraction from the real threat, which is how it replaces search-engines and fact-checking and user research on any topic entirely and is addictive and growing in popularity and can be used by their manufacturers to push narratives and propaganda with an effectiveness we’ve never imagined.

I’m not sure what you’re saying here, yes social media is already being used to do this, and LLM’s will be used to do the same thing but with a great deal more effectiveness, and if you don’t think it’s going to have a massive impact on the world and make everything worse to a disastrous degree, you’re not paying any attention and I almost envy you.

Don’t get sucked in either direction, It will far more disruptive and dangerous on a societal scale than any technological paradigm we’ve dealt with and could very well lead to global catastrophe. Just not the way the sci-fi authors dream of.

It is in a sense a propaganda weapon. We can collectively choose to not use it and ostracize it but the nazis and fascists won’t have the same qualms.

It’s like choosing to use bows out of principle when the enemy has guns. Fun in a comic book, doesn’t work so well in real life.

It’s more like choosing to not use grenades that blow up when shaken even though the enemy is using them, simply because you know that, sure, sometimes it blows up when you want it to and has the correct effect, but more often it blows up in your own face.

Any use of AI will always bring people out, those who will condemn you for using it at all, and those who will assume you are on Their side and bring their bullshit with them, making you look even worse than the clown you are for using AI at all. There is also the fact that AI is cringe and you will be seen as cringe, not as funny or influential, for using it. It also often makes mistakes, mistakes you notice less and less as you use it more, but others will continue to notice and use them to undermine you.

Basically, it makes you dumber to use it at all, and makes everyone hate you. You gain nothing from using AI, and lose so much. It is rare that AI is ever helpful or can do something to make you look good. Maybe 1 out of a 100 attempts you will make something interesting or funny using it, but all the other times will be harsh failures. That’s not even getting into the economic and ecological impact of AI.

As a preface, that’s a very emotional comment that makes you look like a child throwing a tantrum. I will touch on a few things anyways.

You act like both sides are the same but only one is gatekeeping. I don’t care if you use it, I won’t ask you too. Sure Google is shoving down your throat but take it up with them. As an individual, I won’t ostracize you for doing whatever you want.

On the other hand, as an individual, you are brigading, being belligerant, trying to force it out of our community and in general being a little baby about it.

I also think it’s completely laughable to say it has no uses. I think this is really a work experience/domain thing tho. If you don’t work in an office and don’t use computers, I guess it can come off that way. And that’s only if you don’t consider entertainment a use case.

“that’s a very emotional comment that makes you look like a child throwing a tantrum”

              HA

“You act like both sides are the same but only one is gatekeeping.”

…The “two sides” I mentioned are “people who like AI” and “people who hate AI”

“you are brigading, being belligerant, trying to force it out of our community and in general being a little baby about it.”

*Belligerent. Also, funny how you get so defensive over someone not liking AI and pointing out facts about how it is actually harmful to your critical thinking skills. Here is just one example article focused on how AI can affect children, please actually read it and not just feed it to an AI to give you a breakdown of it: https://www.aacap.org/AACAP/Families_and_Youth/Facts_for_Families/FFF-Guide/AI_and_Children-145.aspx

“I think this is really a work experience/domain thing tho. If you don’t work in an office and don’t use computers, I guess it can come off that way.”

I work in IT. I have been forced to learn a Lot about it and the dangers it poses for our office, as well as seeing how divisive it has been among the various departments.

“And that’s only if you don’t consider entertainment a use case.”

Ah yes, burning the environment is a great form of entertainment, all so you can see more slop with 0 value.

AI does have use cases, such as in the medical field, but not LLMs, not the current garbage “AI” that we have. You want something good for AI? Look here: https://www.realgoodai.org/

I wouldn’t let my children use ai, just like I wouldn’t let them talk to strangers? The list of drawbacks are basically a list for using the internet in general in the first place. It’s some serious “video games are dangerous vibes”

You work in IT, so you are clearly too good at coding to need it in small scripts and your environment is too complicated for the bigger thing. But don’t you have documentation to write, Excel sheets, test scripts, etc. ?

I find uses. It’s rewriting information I give it and everything is verified, I’m able to read and tweak it’s output like an adult. Clearly your coworkers are also finding uses, if you have to deal with the fallout (lol).

Entertainment is valid. This is a meme community, the bar is if it make me laugh. I prefer proper OC, but I’ll take AI OC over reposts any day.

On the environmental front, I think it’s overstated. I use mostly local llms, so my impact is the same as playing a demanding game. Data centre’s serve a lot of people, we just need a renewable grid and better laws so they aren’t put in places with no water just because it’s cheaper for them. The real problem is transport, both cars and flights, and shipments of consumer goods. Any activity that’s solely technology driven is better for the environment imo.

AI is dangerous to anyone, children are just the most vulnerable. Look at how many people have suffered mental breaks due to AI encouraging them to self harm or to harm others.

I would never trust an AI to write anything for me, not only is it prone to making mistakes, I have no way to ensure the data I give it isn’t going to be sent off to a datacenter somewhere to be used for unknown purposes. I don’t Just work in IT, I work in Financial IT, and we take security compliance seriously.

Nothing output by an AI is verified, they cannot site their sources.

I won’t even bother to argue on the environmental front, due solely to the fact you just admitted to not caring about it at all.

Either way, it’s very clear you are an AI tech bro, and you’ll support it to the end even as you make yourself look like an absolute clown. I have no further reason to attempt argue with you, just like I see no reason to argue with Trump supporters or Elon Musk supporters. At the very least, I have put information out there to combat your misinformation for anyone who decides to read this thread.

Sadly, this is not an argument you are going to be able to win here. You are behaving rationally and are correct. Bringing rationality to an irrational circle jerk is a bad time.

The sad thing is, we agree with the irrational crowd in 90% of everything else. But if it’s not 100%, that makes you the enemy in their eyes.

It really is. Which is why this propaganda is pushed on the left while the right embraces it.

It’s one of the reasons I’m done with the left. They’re dead in the water and have no idea what they’re at anymore.

The entire movement has somehow regressed severely in my lifetime

I completely agree it feels like propaganda to weaken the left leaning people.

Though the rest of your comment makes no sense lol
