    Many of them are, many of them aren’t. Largely due to the passing of time, jokes that may have been a hit when these were written just aren’t funny in today’s society.

    Alternatively, and also very true, even the greats have bad works. Not every piece will be popular and funny.

    In this case… Yeah, I’m not getting it either. Could be a piece about altered expectations. One would expect classy/classical music in a big home like this, blues just wouldn’t be “right” in this scenario.

      the blues are associated & originated with poor black performers in the american deep south. the name is synonymous with melancholy and misfortune. so you’re right about the expectations being subverted but not getting the whole picture which is that a gaudy mansion and well dressed white people are about as far from the traditional trappings of the blues as possible.

      you could also further interpret it as a dig at cultural appropriation though i don’t think it’s meant to go that far.

      I wonder if it was intended to be multifaceted where you expect classical in a fancy rich home, but also what do these people have to be blue about?
