I would not say I am the survivor type. But I really got into hiking because of a woman named “Grandma Gatewood.” She was an abused spouse that ran from home with what she could find on hand and foraged for food. Ever since I heard about it, I always wanted to hike more. Part of that is learning wild edible foods. My personal favorites are Paw-Paw, Raspberry, Yarrow, Staghorn Sumac, Autumn Olive and Spice bush.
Useful knowledge indeed. I would not have the patience to learn all of this, but we all have different interests!
I recommend small chunks. This goes for anything really. Learning 100 plants for example sounds awful. But learning 2 a week over a year is doable.
