Kind of dangerous rhetoric. Many people push themselves hard and do succeed. They may then still burn out.
Being hard on yourself is beating yourself down internally not trying.
That’s not being hard on yourself, that would be punishing yourself for your failure and telling yourself you are such a disgrace.

Well, I just wasn’t hard enough
It’s working great!
I upped my 1 rep max on bench to 315 lbs, I ran my first 5 km sub 30 min, and self host enough services that I no longer pay any monthly subscriptions (save the internet, power, water etc)
I’m still a POS… but man I’m way less of a POS than I was last year. ;)
