    They are cuddling in the book. These days one might suspect romantic feelings because of that but I think for Tolkien it really was just about friendship. It’s toxic masculinity that physical contact is only allowed in a romantic setting.

      It’s very true of American culture. I have lots of male friends from Europe and South America who have no problem coming in for a hug or wrapping their arm around your shoulder. Took a while to get used to it.
