[French president Macron] Dear french people, we have found 6.5 billion to invest in our military
[Some character] Ah nice, so we can find money to deal with the rising poverty rate and the climate change emergency?
[Macron, looking annoyed, hands raised, standing in front of a capitalist pig counting bills] Choices have to be made
Conveniently, we recently discovered that 211 billion € in government grants are going to various french companies that mostly don’t need them.
I love my country.
I love capitalism.

The “patriotic nationalism” discourse is strong. If people think we need to prepare for war, then they’ll let the government do literally anything without protesting too much. That includes going back on workers rights, which Macron strongly hinted he’ll do to get those 6.5 billions. Get ready to be disappointed.
Yeah. It’s the same playbook everywhere. The only way to hold it back is to refuse to accept it by refusing to allow business as usual to continue, which the French are certainly better than Americans at doing. The lack of investment is also helping the right wing to rise in power.
