HistoryPhotos@piefed.social•5-year old child worker in the shrimp industry, Biloxi, Mississippi, USA, ~1910English
10·4 hours agoThe caption I originally found with the pic says:
Manuel the young shrimp picker, age 5, and a mountain of child labor oyster shells behind him. He worked last year. Understands not a word of English. Biloxi, Mississippi.
I don’t have any further information, so I went with what it said.

5·5 hours agoYou are already in the exact same timeline, there still is a significant amount of child laborers in US agriculture and literally no legal age limit provided parents sign a waiver. US is and has always been a fucked up country
That’s true in most countries. Agriculture is one of the fields (ha) where underage labor is regularly tolerated. Even in the EU, you can be as young as 13 in general agriculture, and many EU states have exemptions to even that low age for family farms, which are usually excluded from employment law.

5·5 hours agoElection spending, in terms of polling places and such, is funded by the states. When US folk say ‘election spending’, they explicitly mean ‘buying ads, air time, etc’, we just don’t say ‘propaganda’ because… it feels bad, I guess.

5·5 hours agoIt’s almost like theories of governance have advanced in the ~250 years since the Constitution was written.
Good thing we’ve ignored them and largely kept the document as-is!

54·9 hours ago"Freedom of speech applies to people, corporations have corporate personhood; therefore, freedom of speech applies to corporations.
Speech can be purchased, as with advertisements, thus, restricting expenditure on political expression is a violation of freedom of speech.
Therefore, corporations can spend as much money as they want on campaigning for political candidates."
It was a disastrous (and narrow 5-4) Supreme Court decision, and rightly condemned by many at the time, including many liberal politicians - and celebrated by conservative politicians.
At last, Valjean, we see each other plain…

HistoryArtifacts@piefed.social•Etruscan chariot, bronze and ivory, Italy, mid-6th century BCEEnglish
3·18 hours agoIt’s probably real - chariots were tools of the nobility, and usually used for racing, parading around (the source summary suggests it’s a parade chariot), or battle-taxis rather than something useful, like long-distance transport. It would only need to fit one or potentially two standing people in it.

7·18 hours agoIt’s less of a “You as you are today could DEFINITELY become a Nazi!” and more “You, if you were born and grew up in a totally different environment, would be a different you who could definitely become a Nazi.”
As General Sherman once observed to later generations who asked how so many people could tolerate so great an evil as slavery, “Man is more a creature of habit than originality.”
