  • I really like pleroma due to the higher character limit.

Im not sure about the 18+ thing, i dont see much adult content in my feed and what content does show up is almlst always tagged as nsfw and hidden by default. If you are just worried because of your own age id suggest embracing the time honored tradition of lying on the internet until you’re old enough.

  • I wasn’t aware of the ansible option when i set mine up. The thing with bridges for me is they don’t really organize into groups how i would have liked, since very chat, even 1:1 is really a “room”, it gets very cluttered, I did eventually figure out how to bridge entire discord guilds into groups automatically but then even with that there is no “don’t notify” option for the entire group you have to individually mute each channel. Setting up each bridge wasnt too hard for the ones that let you use QR logins, but I also ended up making a really weird mistake when trying to bridge XMPP and the error didn’t actually affect me until months later when a new upgrade for continuwuity make the issue i created into one that prevented the docker image from starting, and oh boy was that a fun lesson in how to manually edit sql database files using regex.

I could go on with little nit picks about things, but point being nothing was really an insurmountable roadblock for me, just little annoyances here and there that I’m personally willing to deal with but I can’t imagine many of the folks I regularly communicate with would be okay with.

That said though, Matrix is one of those rare projects that actually improves over time because they aren’t just developing it in order to cash out with some big VC or roll out some bullshit enshittification “premium” subscription once they get enough users. So I’m pretty hopeful we’ll eventually have something good enough to pry more users away from the silos of discord and meta services, some day.

  • Surveillance capitalism in this context would be how the “product” genuis is selling is your usage data, as opposed to what they seem to provide which is song lyrics.

You may have heard the phrase " if you arent paying for it then YOU are the product", An oversimplified version but the same idea.

Genuis is a tracking and metrics service for spotify and other rent seekers in the music industry, they do it by offering lyrics for “free” and tracking as much as they can about users who visit the site.

  • Someone discovered an exploit on cardano (a blockchain) that allowed for a “bad” transaction (think spending the same coin twice, or rejecting a transaction that was already valid).

This got some discussion but an actual fix wasnt the priority. Someone else decided to try and see if they could intentionally create a similar bad transaction.

There is a dedicated test chain which is specifically for those kind of tests but instead of choosing to do the bad transaction on the test chain, the person thought they would just block all internet traffic on their computer, but instead of doing that correctly by unplugging their ethernet cable or turning off the wifi, asked chat GPT how to block traffic ans chatGPT guessed wrong.

… Its a pretty weak excuse IMO. It doesnt sound like the exploit was vibe coded, just that the person trusted instructions about blocking connections from GPT. Like if this was a professional they would be fired immediately for such incompetence, but it sounds like it was not a professional.

Ultimately the problem is that they made the choice to use the main blockchain instead of the test one, that makes their defense of it being an accident a bit weak.

  • Safe is relative but most liiely its wanting 11 because thats the version lineage you are using is based on.

As for these “some websites ive never heard of”… They might just be ai generated pages that hit on keywords common to android such as “root” and “custom rom”. Often they are scams that present instructions looking like they will work on phone models that dont have support for custom roms at all.

So be careful, make sure what you get comes from a decent source like android file host or xda, dont just go with random search results.
