Use a live Linux ISO that can run entirely in memory, and run step 3 in an infinite loop. Take the USB with you and leave the PC running.

Likely not real ice cream, but the cheaper (and more common) ice milk - it has a lower fat content, so more water, and in certain conditions ice crystals do form into small chunks.

Soft disagree. It’s less asynchronous than email, but definitely not a synchronous conversation like a phone call or in-person chat. Caveat: If we are having an active conversation, then people should try to respond promptly, or with minimal delay.
This is set as a permanent status message on my Teams at work
Most of the time, they didn’t even try. I’ve copy/pasted their exact question before and the answer was in one of the top 5 articles.
9 times out of 10 it’s a stupid question that they could have typed into Confluence to get the answer though. I gatekeep all of these requests with
"Sure, I'm fairly busy now, but lets schedule something for a little later today when I have some time. In the meantime, can you put your question in the chat here in case I need to look something up? Thanks"
Keeping it in Canada would be great, but expensive AF to build across that part of Ontario, which is essentially all hills and water.

3·14 days agoNot to mention for the wipers up bit, it’ll stretch out the spring that provides the tension needed to hold it to the window, so even after the wipers thaw, they’ll still work for shit, but now they’ll work for shit forever!
That and if you’re replacing a printer, you can just use the existing plugs as-is; no need to go fishing behind your PC to swap out the USB cable.

4·21 days agoGood thing is, you can go in stages. I started out many years ago with wifi bulbs/plugs through Google, then Alexa (because echo dots went on sale super cheap once). Then I got a Hubitat and started moving things over to Zigbee/Z-wave/local Wifi, i.e. light bulbs got switched over when they burned out, new switches and plugs are local-only, etc. then upgraded my homeassistant to a raspberry pi. I still have Alexa speakers, but Nabu Casa is developing a smart speaker that can be configured to run fully local, so I’ll probably be getting a few of those soon-ish and cut out one more bit of Big Brother at least.

151·21 days agoAlso keeping in mind with the current state of the capitalist hellscape, avoiding companies that supported trump/GOP can be difficult to impossible for a good chunk of people. If the only grocery store that you’re able to get to is Walmart, I am not going to criticize you eating.
Virtually every automaker doung business in North America has kissed trump’s ass at some point in the last decade.
Nestle and Unilever are fucking everywhere and also have many subsidiaries that it can be difficult to figure out if they’re involved in the product you’re using.
Good luck using technology produced by a company that hasn’t supported him or the republican party.
With how badly things are ratfucked, I will applaud any effort to reduce consumption from these companies, because it’s at least a little better than actively supporting them.
pass on open trade/borders with US, their lack of regulation and standards on food means most of what they produce is garbage and/or potentially contaminated. Not to mention simply flooding the markets with their crap. When Mulroney negotiated NAFTA, it crushed so many industries in Canada, and we’re really only starting to attempt to recover from that… Maybe the only good thing Trump has done is to galvanize us to make better trade agreements with other countries and not rely on free trade with the US.

2·22 days agoVisual perspecitve is a hell of a thing. People don’t realize just HOW BIG overpass signs are and how big the lettering needs to be such that it can be read from the highway at highway speeds. USDOT recommends 16" high letters for highway overpasses.
we do need some workshops on “how to make your sign readable because it’s worthless without that simple thing.”
https://www.evergreenresistance.org/events/20250901/Overpass-Bannering-Tips.pdf maybe pass that around?

and 25km/h isn’t super fast on a bike either, at least not for someone in reasonably ok shape and a bike that’s somewhat configured for cycling on roads.
